The writer reports in her article the problems of a group of teenagers who have rented a limousine for their graduation ball on June 2003.
The teenagers had a contract with a company for the rental of a limousine “Stretch Navigator “. After the ceremony for the presentation of the diplomas the teenagers were disappointed of not seeing any “ Navigator “. The company had sent 2 smaller cars and then other chauffeurs to drive them after the ball. That was not all, as another surprise was in store for them. They were driven home with a “ Hummer “.
That was an unfortunate experience for those student teenagers, but not very serious when compared to some others which occur every year. According to various phone calls we receive from panicking families on the day of graduations, some companies do not hesitate of renting 2 or 3 times the same vehicle for the same day, even for the same time, although if it means that they must drop some clients at the last moment telling them that the limousine has broken down or even worse, not being there at the time of the appointment.
The article mentions also the advertising on the internet as well as in the yellow pages about the limousines type “ Stretch SUV “ ( Navigator, Hummer, etc. ) which can accommodate 15 or 20 passengers. Those limousines actually have been taken off the road in October 2003 but clients have some difficulties believing it when told by our reservation agents. By Law the number of passengers transported by limousine is limited to a maximum of eight ( 8 ) regardless of the length of the limousine.
Four golden rules!
A Special Permit
The renting company must have a special taxi permit (for each limousine) . The vehicle must have a registration plate starting with the letters TS.
It is illegal to transport nine passengers.
Regardless of the capacity of the vehicle, the renting company must never allow more than eight passengers in any limousine.
Buckle Up
Passengers must wear a seatbelt all times. Not wearing the seat belt is a transgression to the law and if caught the passenger will be fined $ 80 in addition of three demerit points added to the driving record. In case the passenger doesn't have a driving license the demerit points will be entered at the time he/she will have a driving license.
Dry Ride
Drinking alcoholic beverages in a vehicle is prohibited by the Road Code ( Le code de la sécurité routière) whether the vehicle is moving or motionless. The applicable fine is $ 200 per person.
